Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program is the use of FDA approved medications for alcohol and opioid use disorder in combination with counseling and behavioral health therapies, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.
The goal of MAT is fully recovering from substance use disorder, including the ability to live a self-directed life.
A good candidate for medication-assisted treatment is the patient who has moderate to severe opioid disorder or may have been to multiple abstinence-based programs but is still not stable. These patients may have unusually strong carvings for their drug, and they may not have the ability to remain sober. Effective for treatment of opioid and alcohol use disorder. Not effective for methamphetamine, cannabis, benzodiazepines, and sedative addiction.
Medication-Assisted Treatment has been studied for youth ages 16+ for buprenorphine and ages 18+ for naltrexone. In the State of California, parental consent is required for a minor to receive treatment.
